´ÑºàºÔÅà¿Ã¹ªìÎÍÃì¹ Alexander ÃØè¹ Anniversary Model 103

The year 1909 was a very special one for both the horn and the Mainz brass instrument manufacturer Gebr. Alexander. It was in that year that the imperial patent office awarded Friedrich Sebastian Anton, Georg Philipp Jr. and their uncle Franz Anton Alexander a patent for the rotary valve on the Model 103 double horn. This was the first fully-constructed double horn with completely independent F and B flat sides, a main tuning slide, separate F and B flat tuning slides, and the characteristic change valve with six outlets. The foundation for rapid further development was laid. With the development of the 6-way change valve, a comfortable and easy choice can be made between different keys as well as tuning and intonation has been achieved. Today, double horns are standard in the horn world.

To mark the 100 year anniversary of the award of the patent, the Mainz brass instrument manufacturer Gebr. Alexander –in family hands for over 225 years and led by 7th generation scion Georg Philipp Alexander – is issuing an exclusive limited edition of 25 reproductions of the original 1909 instrument. These will be based on the old designs, but will incorporate the latest technical developments. The historic plans were preserved in the firm archives, and by consulting these it was possible to reconstruct and re-imagine the tubing layout and construction of the 1909 patent model.

Particular attention was paid to excellence of intonation and playability of the double horn during the entire planning for the recreation of the original instruments of 1909.

The fixed bell of the yellow brass instrument is hand-hammered, with gusset, from a single piece of brass. This guarantees that the material strength in the bell’s dispersal will not be overly thin. Further traditional features include a lead pipe without water key, the absence of a nickel-silver hand guard on lead pipe and bell branch, and brass inner slide sleeves. Valve springs and linkages will be made by traditional methods, valve keys will be forged by hand, and braces individually handcrafted. The entire instrument will be produced exclusively in yellow brass and polished to a high gloss.
For an exclusive exterior touch, the bell will be hand engraved with the Alexander crest and, if desired, the name of the owner. Further historical engravings will decorate the valve caps.

Even the form fitting case, made of wood with a leather cover, is following the original form traditionally fitted both inside and out in the style of a century ago.

The double horn has established itself as the orchestral instrument of choice.
The combination of full Bb and F horns offers the musician great flexibility in intonation and tone. There is also a definite correlation between mass and tonal projection.

With full double horns the thumb valve serves to change to either the shorter
Bb horn or longer F horn. Gebr. Alexander furnishes some of its double horn models with an extra thumb valve in E/A, that with the addition of an extension can be used as a stopping valve (for example, Model 104 or 1104).

Some double horns are built according to the French “ascending” system, in which the third valve raises the pitch (in F as well as Bb) by a whole tone.
