Instrument Setup
Professional setup for string instruments
Setup for string instruments is one of the most important steps. Each step of the setup directly affects the instrument’s quality, making it easier to play and improving the sound. Our instruments stand out because professional musicians play-test them during setup by specialists in string instruments, so you can be sure of getting the best possible instrument for the price.
"String setup" refers to the final stage of string-instrument production. Playing an instrument that has been properly set up allows you to experience its true quality and performance.
A well-set-up instrument should have:
Pegs that turn smoothly and hold firmly when tuning, with each peg shaft aligned with the opposite hole in the pegbox.
A soundpost correctly placed between the top and back plates. The soundpost is the heart of the violin; the instrument should be played and the soundpost adjusted together with bridge fitting to achieve the desired tone.
A bridge that is fitted with care: the bridge sets the correct string height and distance from the fingerboard and the right string tension for each instrument. Otherwise the instrument can produce unpleasant buzzing. Proper bridge fitting also helps the violin produce a rich, pleasing spectrum of sound.
The final step, once everything is in place, is fine-tuning the soundpost and the bridge-to-tailpiece distance so the sound is clear, focused, resonant, and easy to play—especially when crossing strings.
